It is with great sadness and shock that we share the news that Ed Glinert passed away on Saturday, May 21st from a sudden and unexpected stroke.
Ed was a well-respected music publisher and Canadian music industry veteran. Prior to co-founding the Casablanca group of companies, Ed Glinert represented numerous music publishers, songwriters, recording artists, record companies, distribution companies and concert promoters as one of Canada's foremost entertainment attorneys. His clients included individuals such as Ray Charles, Muddy Waters, Howlin' Wolf, James Cotton, David Letterman, Jim Carey and Howie Mandel to name a few.
Ed's early career in the music business began as the founder and owner of the Frederick Lewis Artist Placement Bureau, one of Canada's largest theatrical agencies from 1967 through 1971 where he booked dates for legendary acts including Led Zeppelin, John Denver, Sly and the Family Stone, Neil Diamond, Gordon Lightfoot, Five Man Electrical Band, Kensington Market and the Guess Who. From 1977 through 1982, Ed also co-owned National Variety Promotions ("NVP") one of Canada's largest adult contemporary concert promoters which presented such acts as Liza Minnelli, Frank Sinatra, Don Rickles and Steve Lawrence as well as produced the stage play, Pirates of Penzance starring Barry Bestwick and Andy Gibb at the Royal Alexandra Theatre. Ed also co-founded The Children's Group, owner of the hit series "Classical Kids" which has been one of the most successful series of children's records in history.
Ed was an active member of the Canadian Music Publishers Association (CMPA), a board member of SOCAN, the International Association of Entertainment Lawyers, Canadian Independent Music Association (CIMA), the Academy of Canadian Cinema and Television, and Canadian Academy of Recording Arts & Science (CARAS)as well as serving as a director of the CMRRA. He was also a regular attendee at MIDEM in Cannes France and CMW (Canadian Music Week) in Toronto, Ontario.
Ed was a true friend and mentor who managed to touch a lot of people lives, helping them in various capacities and generously giving his time, knowledge, advice and compassion to his friends, colleagues and even strangers wanting advice on how to break into the music business. The family, knowing Ed's generous nature, made the decision to make him an organ donor so that he might help countless other people live full and productive lives
We will miss Ed's spirit, friendship, guidance every day.
